The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Gujarat government and US chipmaker Micron has been dubbed a "historic day for India" by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.The largest semiconductor memory IDM in America, Micron Technology, and the Government of Gujarat signed the MoU. Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, and Ashwini Vaishnaw, the union minister for railways, communications, electronics, and information technology, witnessed the signing of the MoU.

 

Following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, the Gujarat government announced that Micron Technology will invest USD 2.5 billion (INR 22,500 crore) to build an ATMP (assembly, test, marking, and packaging) facility in Gujarat's Sanand GIDC-II.

 

The MoU marks a turning point for India since it will stimulate the domestic semiconductor ecosystem by luring other related sectors that need raw materials and finished goods for this industry to Gujarat.

 

Micron Technology will set up an Assembly and Test facility where it will concentrate on converting wafers into solid-state drives, memory modules, and ball grid array (BGA) integrated circuit packages.

 

The construction of this facility will fundamentally alter India's semiconductor manufacturing industry. It promised to create 20,000 chances for work, or 5,000 direct and 15,000 indirect.

 

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stressed the importance of semiconductors in her remarks to the media, and she noted that Micron Technologies will erect India's first chip manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat.

 

"Today, Semiconductor chip manufacturing's MoU was signed in Gujarat. Semiconductor is a foundational industry. India's first chip manufacturing plant will be set up in Gujarat's Sanand by Micron Technologies," said Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
